Daughter Of The Sea
In 1579, all alone on an uninhabited island, Maria gives birth to Mary, the daughter of Francis Drake.
Mother and daughter are captured by pirates, sold into slavery and sold again, ending up on the Spice Island of Ternate.
Aged 14, Mary is sold by her mother to a Chinese sea captain, Chan Shan, for 5 gold coins.
As his temporary wife for the six months of the year that he lives in Melaka, Mary comes to love the city with its colourful inhabitants, and forms a close relationship with Chan.
